Dear Parents,
Some of you were asking at the conferences for a copy of the sight words or “word wall” words we are learning in kindergarten. Attached is a list of the Dolch site words, and a few added words from our reading curriculum, that will make up our word wall. These are words that are tricky for kindergarteners to sound out, and therefore are learned by sight recognition. Here are some activities that I recommend you do with our sight words at home if you want your child to have some extra practice.
*Make a double set of 3 X
5” cards of word wall words and use to:
*Play “Go Fish”
*Memory (Words can also be
written with permanent marker on inside of
plastic milk lids. Make sure
the words are printed on different colored lids, so they aren’t remembering the
color instead of the word.)
*”Slap Jack” (Child must
read back cards he/she gets to be able to keep their stack.)
*Make a set of 3 X 5” cards
with word wall words printed on them and place them on the child’s wall.
Turn out the lights at night and use a flashlight to point to the words
on the wall and read them.
*Make a word wall word
train and tape on the wall and practice reading.
*Make a word wall word
paper chain to read and show the child visually
how many words he/she has learned
to read!
*Put word wall words on the
circles of a “Twister” game and spinner and
play a different sort of “Twister”
game. Right hand on “this”, left
foot on
“from”.
It was so nice to see everyone at the conferences last week. I hope that this list of sight words helps, and as always let me know if you have any questions or concerns!
Sincerely in Christ,
Ms. Bell
